Ecc. Ch1 sermon

V.1-3 "Conclusion reached: All is vanity

"Vanities of vanities =, saith the preacher, vanities of vanities; all is vanity. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?"

After traveling and discovering "all things under the sun" Solomon came to a conclusion and wrote it at the very beginning of Ecclesiastes, all is vanity. That the world itself is vanity. Remember this word vanity  for it's significance for the bible uses this world 73 times. It's meaning is as following, it  is emptiness, transitory, and unsatisfactory. So because of this truth , what purpose is there for man who labors under the sun. His work with out God being involved leaves him wanting and never satisfied with life.

V. 4- 18

The world is a never ending cycle. There is no rest for the world, nor is there truly any rest for a man. Everything is in a cycle of unrest; the sun rises and sets, but then it rises up again in the same spot. The wind flows to the south then to the north and back to the south . The river could flow to the sea and much like man the sea is never full and the water return to the place they started. It is a constant circuit. Because it never changes there is no satisfaction in hearing or seeing anything in this world because it has all be done before in a circuit, For instant it is like when you see young people now a days wearing the same clothes that the older generation wore before. For nothing is new is in this world. This circuit of monotony continues  to the point that no one remembers what came before and the sane will go to our generation.

V. 12-18 Wisdom can not satisfy

King Solomon, the preacher, the wisest of all man. Set out to try and find meaning with all he knew. "And I gave my heat (will) to see and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven; this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised there with." He put all of himself to learn the meaning to it all only to find it to be a "vexation of spirit." Vexation meaning grasping, futile. For in labor he found no satisfaction, and what he found in knowledge and wisdom only sadden him and left him tired and mad. "And I gave my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly;" "For in much wisdom is much grief : and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow."

Application

So what can we take from this? That nothing in this world has meaning and that we should just pack in? No. Solomon was showing how the world of man will not sustain you. This world will not bring you joy it will not fill the hole that you find inside yourself. You can labor all your days and learn all you can ever want to, but all of that work and "wisdom" will be in vain without God in your life. God will even all you to "exercise" your curiosity to try and see if you can, but in searching you will find the evils of this world and it will wear on you and will bring you no rest. But through Jesus we have the rest we seek. The knowledge you believe will bring you peace is the knowledge that Christ loves you and has given himself so that you will find peace. My only question is will you come to Christ for the fullness and blessings he bestows or will you stay in the world of vanity and remain empty?

Vanities of Vanities, saith the preacher, vanities of vanities; all is vanity."

For where vanity is emptiness, Christ is completion.
